The directors of scrapped movie Batgirl have spoken out in ‘shock’ after the movie was cancelled.

Last year, it was confirmed that the Warner Bros film would be an HBO Max original film, which was set to star Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon in the film.

The film, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, was scheduled to hit our screens later this year, but Warner Bros Discovery reportedly decided to ditch the $90 million movie, opting not to release it in neither the cinema nor on the streaming platform.

Now, the minds behind the film have spoken out after the news surfaced, explaining that they are ‘saddened’ to hear the film will not see the light of day.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, 3 August, the pair wrote: “We are saddened and shocked by the news. We still can’t believe it.

“As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences, and while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves. Maybe one day they will insha’Allah,” they penned on the social media platform.

The filmmakers went on to thank those who were involved in the cast, 'especially the great Leslie Grace, who portrayed Batgirl with so much passion, dedication and humanity'.

“In any case, as huge fans of Batman since we were little kids, it was a privilege and an honour to have been a part of the DCEU, even if it was for a brief moment. Batgirl For Life.”

Fans quickly took to the comments to support the long-time friends and directors, with one person writing: “Love you buddy devastated to hear this.”

“Unbelievable! Would have loved to see that movie,” another person lamented.

Meanwhile, others tried to urge the entertainment company with the hashtag #ReleaseBatgirl.

“#ReleaseBatgirl this is such BS! It totally should have got a theatrical release,” one person wrote, while others simply added the hashtag in solidarity in the comments section.

Elsewhere, Leslie said she felt ‘blessed’ to work on the movie despite executives deeming the film ‘awful’.

She said in an Instagram statement: “Querida familia! On the heels of the recent news about our movie 'Batgirl,' I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over seven months in Scotland.

“I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process! To every Batgirl fan – THANK YOU for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, 'my own damn hero!'''
