Taylor Swift has offered fans a candid glimpse into her mental wellness toolkit, revealing the specific coping mantra and grounding mindset she relies on when life threatens to feel "unmanageably big."
Despite orchestrating historic, stadium-filling world tours and managing the intense public scrutiny that accompanies global megastardom, Swift explained that staying grounded requires active, intentional emotional boundaries.
Speaking about the pressure of operating under a worldwide spotlight during a career-spanning retrospective for The Icon Sessions—presented by the Recording Academy’s Songwriters & Composers Wing—the singer-songwriter shared the focused internal phrase she turns to when circumstances feel overwhelming.
“I go through several processes and coping mechanisms that I’ve gone through over the years,” she said. “And one of them is saying, ‘You chose this. You chose this every day. You could have opted out of this any day before it got unmanageably big.’ And I decided not to because I love it that much.”

For Swift, “that’s just where it begins and where it ends.”
“Everything that comes with this ultimately is worth it as long as I get to still make music,” she added.

Tackling the 'Unmanageably Big'
Swift, who has previously discussed how the sheer scale of modern fame can make life feel disproportionately sized, explained that spiraling often happens when trying to process every demand, critique, and commitment all at once.
To counter that anxiety, the star focuses on emotional regulation—reminding herself to separate the immediate reality right in front of her from the uncontrollable noise surrounding her public persona.
She explained that once she recognized her primary motivation was performing and creating for her fans, she was able to contextualize the immense pressure she was placing on herself.
“I realized that I’m making music because I’m playing for the fans,” she explained. “I’m putting this out for people who care about it and who look to music as a way to cope with their life in the way that I did.
“I think that if you can actually go through all those checkpoints and realize that putting out music you’ve made that you love so much is not the path to universal validation, if you’re still doing it, then you love it for the right reasons.”
Protecting Energy and Long-Term Peace
The pop icon emphasized that maintaining creative stamina across a two-decade career comes from leaning into passion and genuine connection rather than external approval.
"I hope you remember that in the music industry as wild and ever-changing as it is, enthusiasm can protect you from anything. I would know," she told the audience of songwriters and composers, before adding: "I never turned to music to forget my human experience. I turned to music to remember it."
Her candid reflections serve as a grounded reminder that even at the highest levels of global success, simple perspective shifts and self-chosen purpose remain the most effective anchors against burnout.
