Reese Witherspoon has officially filed for divorce from Jim Toth, just a week after announcing they would be parting ways.

The Legally Blonde star cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.

The estranged couple, who share a 10-year-old son called Tennessee, have been married for 12 years, after tying the knot in March 2011.

"We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together," she wrote.

"Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter."

She went on to say these situations are "never easy," before asking people to respect their privacy as a family.

With the wheels now officially in motion on their split, it's reported the former couple will have no difficulty dividing up their assets, thanks to a prenup agreement they both signed prior to the wedding.

In the divorce papers, which were filed in Nashville, Tennessee, 47-year-old Witherspoon says she will submit a permanent parenting plan for their child, to be approved by the judge.

According to Page Six, the couple had been working on their issues, adding that arriving at a decision to divorce "took a long time."

A source told the publication that many people in Hollywood were aware they were having marriage problems and the divorce was a "badly kept secret" for months.

However, they insisted "there is no drama," adding that they "love their son Tennessee and this is their focus. They will continue to co-parent amicably."

Reese and Jim first met at a party in January 2010, shortly after the Morning Show actor split from then-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal.

By December 2010, the couple were engaged to be married, however they initially decided to keep their relationship update quiet from the public.

After sharing their news, Reese told Elle magazine she never thought she would get married again before meeting Jim.

"Jim said, ‘I’m gonna show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is. I’m going to take care of you'," she said.

The following March they wed in an intimate ceremony at Witherspoon's 1920s ranch estate in Ojai, California.

They welcomed their son, Tennessee James in September 2012.
