Orlando Bloom candidly details threesome scene with real-life sisters Rooney and Kate Mara

Orlando Bloom has opened up about filming one of the more unusual scenes from his latest movie, which saw him get intimate on screen with real-life sisters Rooney and Kate Mara.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star appears alongside the pair in Bucking Fastard, the latest film from acclaimed German director Werner Herzog.

Rooney and Kate take on the roles of Joan and Jean Holbrooke, two sisters whose lives are deeply intertwined, while Bloom plays Gareth, a charming man who becomes romantically involved with them both.

The film recently made its world premiere before Bloom and Herzog travelled to the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, where the actor was asked about working opposite the sisters.

Whilst the premise may sound complicated enough already, Bloom revealed the threesome scene itself was approached in a surprisingly understated way.

Speaking about the characters, as reported by Variety, he said there is ‘such simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters’.

Bloom continued: “My character, the Bucking Fastard, is sensitive too. And he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways. It was a very sincere sort of moment that was created.”

Herzog also offered some insight into how the sequence came together, admitting there were limits to how much direction he wanted to give Bloom once cameras started rolling.

He said: “There are moments when a director has to step back.”

“In the love scene, I said to Orlando: ‘You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions.’ It is beautiful because it has such charm and depth.”

Bucking Fastard follows Joan and Jean, who are described in the film’s synopsis as being so close that they speak in unison, share the same dreams and fall in love with the same man.

Beyond the headline-grabbing scene, Herzog has also spoken highly of Bloom’s performance, explaining that he wanted the actor to move away from the image audiences might ordinarily associate with him.

The filmmaker said Bloom had ‘left behind what he is famous for: the heartthrob for the teenies’, whilst revealing he encouraged the 49-year-old to take his career into different territory.

Herzog recalled telling him: “You have to step into a new arena, play different parts”

Bloom was similarly enthusiastic about the opportunity, describing working with Herzog as a ‘bucket list item’.

He said: “What I love about ‘Bucking Fastard’ is that it refuses to judge its characters and offer any kind of easy answers.”

“It was wonderful to work with Kate and Rooney; I’ve been a long admirer of both of them. We had a lot of fun in Dublin. It was a great experience and certainly a bucket-list opportunity to work with someone like Werner and such a phenomenal cast.”
