Dax Shepard has explained the rules that he and Kristen Bell have in place for their kids, Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, when it comes to using curse words.

Shepard and Bell have previously been open about some details about their parenting style, with Bell having raised eyebrows last year as she described a form of 'free-range parenting' that they adopted while on vacation in Copenhagen.

Bell told Jimmy Kimmel at the time that the family's hotel 'open[ed] up into the theme park', so she and Shepard 'didn’t see' their two daughters for 'seven hours' a day as they enjoyed themselves at the park.

The Frozen star assured that everyone 'returned home' safe, and now Shepard has opened up about another choice the parents made, which his podcast guest Seth Meyers had different views on.

In an episode of his Armchair Expert show, Shepard spoke with guest Meyers about their different approaches to their kids using curse words.

Shepard explained he 'fully' swears in front of his two children, and they in turn are 'allowed to swear'.

However, it's not all free reign.

The Parenthood actor explained that his kids can't swear with no fear of getting punished for it, but they're allowed to do so when it's 'called for'.

"[If] they land it and it's in the house and not out at a restaurant, it's okay," he said, adding: "I was looking for competence."

"Also my defense of it is like, I just told the girls, 'Hey, these are noises that come out of your mouth and you assign what they mean to you,'" he continued.

Meyers, on the other hand, takes a different approach with his wife, Alexi Ashe, and their three children.

The couple try to avoid swearing in front of their kids, as Meyers said: "I think it's just the fear for us. It's the fear that they're going to take it to school, you know."

He continued: "I think with my daughter, [I could probably trust her]. Yeah. 'I'm going to tell you this word. Don't say it at school.' The boys, you know, they're going to say it immediately."

Meyers acknowledged that other kids at schools are likely to already know swear words, but explained he and his wife just wouldn't want their kids to say a curse word in front of a teacher.

Though not everyone may agree with Bell and Shepard's parenting styles, Bell has previously defended herself on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2021, when she said: "You can judge me if you want, I'm not doing anything wrong."
