Getting a first piercing is a major milestone for many young people, with parents often folding to demands from their kids to let them have an earring or two.
But not many would say yes to a metal bar through their child's fingers.
In a shocking post on a TikTok account shared with her mom Kim Kardashian, 12-year-old North West flaunted her new body adornment to their 19 million followers with a shot of her reddened middle finger post-piercing.
The young girl flaunted her new piece of jewellery in three posts that sparked an almost immediate backlash from concerned fans, many of whom could not understand why North had been given permission to get a dermal piercing.

This type of piercing is not like getting an earring, instead, it involves a small surgical procedure where a flat-bottomed anchor is placed under the skin to hold a piece of jewellery in place. It appears from her TikTok posts that North had multiple dermal piercings installed during the operation.
For the bar placed through the middle finger of her right hand, North showed a glimpse of the surgery require to get it installed. The post shows a long metal needle that had been inserted to create the space for the piece of jewellery, which had silver gems on either side.
Another image shared by North shows another dermal piercing in her henna-tattooed left hand, with a large blue gem sticking out of her middle finger.
Mom Kim did not appear in the clips posted on TikTok, nor did father Kanye West (Ye) who has allegedly not seen the kids in months.
The SKIMS founder made this claim on a podcast, where she also said: "It's not easy. But, I mean, I raise the kids, you know, full-time. They live with me.
"I think just their job as their mom is just to make sure that they stick to their routine and they're healthy and happy," she later added in the same interview.
The dermal implant posts triggered an immediate backlash across various social media platforms, with many questioning how Kim could allow North to get such serious piercings at the tender age of 12.
One outraged commenter said: "My parents would have never allowed something like this, which is why I stupidly went behind their back and did it.
"I’m not a parent, but I just couldn’t imagine giving my 12 year-old permission to have dermal and surface piercings like this."
North's new piercings bizarrely followed a massive controversy just last month, where she showed off some of her Halloween outfit plans to her followers. Many of whom questioned why a young girl was appearing in such an adult outfit, with fake face tattoos and a septum piercing.
But this reaction clearly had little impact on the styling decisions made for North, who thanked her mom for allowing her to get the dermal piercings in each hand.
Many also raised concerns about the health implications of dermal piercings, with one Reddit user claiming: "One of three things is going to happen. 1. Her body will reject it. 2. She will get a massive infection because she is 12 and very likely does not wash her hands as often as she should.
"3. It will get ripped out again she is 12 and is going to behave like a child."
Adults who have had dermal piercings were astounded by the decision to let a middle schooler get such an intense body modification, with one experienced commenter adding: "Besides from the fact she is only 12 years old, I've had dermals myself as an adult.
"They are prone to rejecting and I'm assuming that as she's still growing she's going to be prone to it rejecting even more. So dumb all round."
Another blasted: "Why are they letting 12 year olds look 25? Kim and [Kanye] needs to be a better parents and North needs to be reminded she’s a little girl, not a grown adult."
