Fans notice Keith Urban changed lyric in song about Nicole Kidman as they announce divorce

People have come out in defense of the singer, claiming its 'not fair to trash someone for their choices'

Keith Urban fans have unearthed a clip of the country icon seemingly changing the lyrics to a song about his estranged wife, Nicole Kidman, before their marriage split was revealed.

On September 30, Australian actress Kidman, 58, filed for divorce from New Zealand-born musician Urban, 57, after 19 years of marriage.

The pair wed in 2006 after meeting a year earlier and share two children, 17-year-old Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.

According to documents obtained by People, Kidman’s request was filed in a Tennessee court, citing irreconcilable differences between the Babygirl star and the four-time Grammy winner.

The filings include a marriage dissolution and a childcare plan agreed on by the couple. Both have reportedly been submitted for a judge’s approval.

Some fans of the A-List pair have been searching online for tell-tale signs of their break-up and have come across a video of Urban singing his song, The Fighter.

The now-viral clip was shared by his guitar player, Maggie Baugh, on Instagram. The singer can be heard saying: “When they're tryna’ get to you, Maggie I'll be your guitar player.”

The real lyrics to the song, which was released in 2017, read: When they're tryna get to you, baby, I'll be the fighter.”

Fans have come out in droves to debate the apparent lyric change, with one commenting: “It is so trashy to do this to a song inspired by his wife. It’s the ultimate ick.”

“Show some class Keith for goodness sake!,” replied someone else.

A third commented: “So much judgement here. unless you are living with these two, you have absolutely no idea what went on behind closed doors everyone trashing Keith.

“How do you know what she was like to live with? I’m not taking sides here but it’s not fair to trash someone for their choices when none of you have any idea at all what their life was like behind closed doors.”

In an interview with the Boot, Urban said that The Fighter was inspired by the early days of his and Kidman’s relationship.

"I was working with Busbee that day; we were in London. I was actually driving to the studio to work on this other song we started, and I had most of it the chorus in my head, and it felt like I had most of the song in my head — the verses just had to flesh out,” he explained to the outlet.

“I walked into the studio and played the chord progression, and he built this track really quickly, and then I could sing over the top of it.

"It was just a very quick, quick song to write, because I literally thought about Nic and I and our relationship in the beginning, and some of the things we had said all went into that song.”

In another interview with Billboard, the father-of-two said that the Carrie Underwood-featuring track was written about wanting to ‘heal’ and ‘take care of somebody’.

“It’s really like a vow in so many ways,” he confessed. “I want that tenderness to not have to get hardened to the world. That’s my job as her husband, to put myself around her so she can remain that way. And that’s really the chorus of The Fighter.

Many details of Kidman and Urban’s divorce remain under wraps, including how the pair will split their numerous properties and their $250 million and $75 million net worths, respectively.

According to reports, the Prom actor could owe her former husband more than $11 million due to a so-called ‘cocaine clause’ written in their prenuptial agreement.

Outlets claim that Urban could earn $600,000 from Kidman for every year they were married, if he remained sober during their relationship.

The Messed Up As Me singer has spoken about his relationship with drugs and alcohol in the past, telling Oprah Winfrey in 2010 that the mother-of-two staged an intervention months after their wedding.

"Everything was just designed, I believe, for that moment to fuse us together,” he explained. “I look back now and realise Nic has taught me so much and brought so much into my life and opened my eyes in so many ways. [This is] the best place I've ever been.”
