People have been left horrified after seeing a video of a bed which is designed to protect people from earthquakes.

There are plenty of measures to be taken to decrease the risk if an earthquake hits.

For example, buildings can be constructed in such a way as to minimise the chance of their collapsing.

You might also take shelter under a desk or table to reduce the risk of debris hitting you.

Of course, with something like an earthquake there's only so much you can do, and if the earthquake is powerful enough then well, all bets are off.

But one person appeared to come with a, let's say 'creative', way of trying to protect people in the event that their home is hit by one.

If the reaction of everyone who saw a clip of it is anything to go by though, it's pretty clear that the 'solution' actually creates more problems than it solves.

So what is this weird safety technology to counter earthquakes?

I give you - the anti-earthquake bed.

It might look like a sort of normal bed but in the event of seismic activity the bed will open up and immediately drag its occupant into a protective box.

Seeing it in action, the bed snaps up hapless people whether they're awake or asleep.

Once inside, the person is protected from any falling debris and can be found by rescuers more easily.

It also contains enough supplies of water and oxygen to keep you going, hopefully, long enough to be found.

There's even a TV screen inside to keep you entertained.

At least, that's how it's supposed to work in theory - in reality many people saw it less as a lifesaver and more as their own person automatic coffin.

People took to social media platform Reddit to share their thoughts on the disturbing invention.

One wrote: "How are you going to get out when you’re buried under tons and tons of rubble. This is just a fancy coffin."

A second commented: "Exactly where I want to be in an earthquake, stuck in a metal box under tons of debris."

Another person took it upon themselves to say what many of you have probably been thinking, writing: "I can picture some poor couple going at it a bit too aggressively and the bed suddenly eats them."

Not ideal, especially considering your supplies of water and air would last half as long.

Someone else simply posted: "Tomb designed to preserve your body in an earthquake."
