Huge rescue mission underway after tourist gets trapped 1,600ft down active volcano

Juliana Marins, 26, is said to have been trapped in the volcano in Indonesia for three days

A Brazilian national has been trapped in an active volcano for three days, sparking a huge rescue mission to rescue the 26-year-old tourist.

In the early hours of Saturday morning (June 21), Juliana Marins fell off a cliff around Cemara Nunggal on route to the peak of Mount Rinjani in Indonesia. The volcano is active and last erupted in September 2016.

Juliana is said to have been on a hike with a guide when the incident occurred. Reportedly she asked the guide for a break, but the group allegedly carried on without her.

When the guide returned they found Juliana had fallen down the cliff.

Apparently Juliana didn't know where to go after the guide left her.

"She didn’t know what to do. When the guide came back because he saw that she was taking too long, he saw that she had fallen down there," claims her sister Marianna.

Other hikers described the climb as 'really hard'.

Speaking to Brazlian TV network Globo, a man recalled: "It was really early, before sunrise, in bad visibility conditions with just a simple lantern to light up the terrain which was difficult and slippery."

As of yesterday (June 23), a rescue mission was underway to try and save Juliana, who is a publicist from Niterói.

Gunung Rinjani National Park said in a Facebook statement that the young woman had been 'successfully monitored using a drone, in a position stuck on a rock cliff at a depth of 500 meters and visually motionless'.

The park continued: "Two rescue personnel were deployed to reach the victim's location and check the second anchor point at a depth of 350m (1,140 ft). However, after observation, two large overhangs were found before reaching the victim, making it impossible to install the anchor. The rescue team had to climb to reach the victim."

Sadly they had to abandon the rescue because of poor weather conditions.

Juliana's family and friends have been issuing social media appeals to have her saved.

In video shared to an Instagram page dedicated to Juliana's rescue, a loved one shared: "Juliana has been missing for over 2 days on Mount Rinjani, in Lombok, Indonesia. She needs URGENT rescue! Her life is depending on that!"

According to Juliana's family, the rescue team were 350m away from her when they had to abandon the recent rescue efforts.

"A whole day and they advanced only 250 meters below, there were 350 meters left to reach Juliana, and they retreated," they said in a statement.

"We need help, we need the rescue to reach Juliana urgently!"
