Heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been injured in a car crash that has killed two people in Nigeria.

Local authorities have confirmed Joshua is doing 'fine' after being taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries, as per the BBC.

It remains unclear at this time the identities of the two individuals who have died after the tragic incident on the Ogun–Lagos state expressway on Monday (December 29).

Joshua, who is born in the UK, has family roots in Sagamu, a town in Ogun State of Nigeria.

The 36-year-old boxer is the son of British-Nigerian parents, having said in the past: "I’m proudly Nigerian and proudly British."

Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter, has spoken to the Daily Mail, saying: "I am away on a family holiday and awoke to the news of this incident.

"We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images.

"We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course."

An eyewitness, named as Adeniyi Orojo, spoke to Punch following the incident and described the tragic scene.

He said: "It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him.

"There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash.

"Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. The passenger beside the driver and Joshua died on the spot."

Footage seen on social media saw a passersby helping a dazed Joshua out of the wreck, with the Telegraph reporting that an eyewitness claimed that a car collided with a stationary truck at around 11am local time.

LADbible Group has contacted Joshua's representatives for comment.

It comes just weeks after Joshua defeated Jake Paul in a heavyweight fight, with the Brit calling out Tyson Fury in the aftermath of the fight.

Paul broke his jaw in the Netflix-streamed fight after Joshua knocked out the YouTuber in the sixth round.

Despite winning the bout comfortably, Joshua split a whopping £137 million with Paul following the fight in Miami.
