Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following what officials have described as a 'miracle recovery', after a devastating car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.
The former heavyweight world champion was involved in the fatal road traffic accident on Monday (December 29) while travelling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Nigeria.
The 36-year-old was a passenger sitting in the back of the vehicle, which collided with a stationary truck, leaving two members of his team dead at the scene.
Now, a fresh statement issued by the Lagos State Government has confirmed that the British boxer has been released from medical care and will continue his recovery at home.

In a post shared on X and signed by Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso and Special Adviser Information and Strategy Kayode Akinmade, officials began: "ANTHONY JOSHUA OUT OF HOSPITAL.

"The governments of Lagos and Ogun states, once again, commiserate with the families of the two young men - Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami - who tragically and unfortunately lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua on the 29th Dec 2025.
"We pray The Almighty grant the repose of their souls whilst granting their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss."
Speaking about Joshua, who knocked out Jake Paul just 10 days prior to the accident, the statement continued: "Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon though heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends he was deemed clinical fit to recuperate from home.
"Anthony and his mother were at the funeral home in Lagos this afternoon to pay their final respects to his two departed friends as they were being prepared for repatriation scheduled for later this evening."
Joshua had been receiving treatment at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, following the crash, which authorities previously alleged could have been prevented if not for ‘over-speeding’ and ‘wrongful overtaking'.

Assistant Corps Marshal and FRSC Public Education Officer Olusegun Ogungbemide issued a statement earlier this week, which read in part: "Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking 'maneuver' and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road."
After news broke of the crash, Joshua's foe Paul took to X to send the Brit his condolonces.
"Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident," the influencer wrote.
