Maria Cardona, who worked on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, still doesn't think the United States is ready for a woman President.
Reflecting on the night in 2016, when Trump won the election over Clinton, Cardona said she could 'cry if she thinks about it too much,' 10 years on.
“It was awful, just heart wrenching," she told the Irish Independent.
"I can’t tell you how many people I run into who say, ‘my goodness, Hillary Clinton would have been such an amazing and transformational present’ and how much the country needed her in that moment.”

On the November night in 2016, Cardona recalls being on CNN, believing 'they could still do this,' although recalls the devastation when she realized it was all over.
As well as Clinton, Cardona has also worked on as an adviser to Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
Now, ten years on from that night, Cardona still can't see things changing.
Since 2016, Kamala Harris is the only woman to have run for President, announcing her running in 2019. However, she later dropped out from the race before the primaries.
In 2024, she ran as the Democratic nominee after Biden withdrew from the race, but lost to Trump.
Cardona said that Harris put on 'the best campaign in 107 days,' and had Biden have stepped down six months prior, believes Harris could have had her own campaign, rather than 'taking over someone else's'.
“As much as I want to say that this country is ready to elect a woman president, I don’t think we are, sadly,” Cardona told the outlet, which she said 'hurts her soul' to say.
The next general elections will be held in the United States in 2028, to which Cardona says 'no one has the upper hand' at the moment.
Will Donald Trump run for President in 2028?

Despite making a number of jokes, and Truth Social posts - it's very unlikely Donald Trump will be able to run for President in 2028.
This is due to the fact that the POTUS has already been elected twice, in 2016, and 2024.
Despite some countries, including the United Kingdom, having no rules on how long a leader can serve - the United States actually has very strict ones.
The 22nd Amendment says that no one can be elected as President more than twice - and even Trump isn't able to get past those rules.
However, it didn't stop him taking to Truth Social lately to share an AI post of himself running for President once again.
In the AI generated image, Trump could be seen wearing his classic blue suit and red tie. Underneath, the words 'Trump 2028 Make America Great Again' were written, with a crowd of people wearing red MAGA hats.
It's not the first time he's joked about it either.
White House Correspondents’ Dinner, while putting on his red hat, he said: "I won three times, now I'm going to do it again."
