Heartbreaking footage filmed from an apartment opposite the World Trade Center shows the chaos after the North Tower was struck on September 11, 2001.

While it's been more than 20 years since one of the world's deadliest terrorist attacks took place in New York City, it's clear that even to this day haunting new details of the incident that killed almost 3,000 people continue to reveal themselves.

The latest sees home footage from an apartment complex mere metres away from the Twin Towers, showing the chaos after the North Tower was struck.

The overlay text of the short clip uploaded by account user @9l11footage on TikTok reads: "9/11. Guy films the area around WTC complex from his apartment, while the North Tower is burning."

It shows civilians running out of the building and into the streets as the tower was engulfed in a cloud of dark grey smoke.

The horrifying clip has since gone viral after clocking up more than 142.7k views in less than 24 hours since it was first posted to the platform.

Dozens have rushed to the comments to share their reactions with one TikTok user writing: "There were apartments THAT close to the World Trade Center!"

A second commented: "Heartbreaking to think that was the last time those doors were walked through."

"I want to tell them to run and run fast," added a third.

"With every year that passes," penned a final TikTok user, "I see more footage from so many different angles and perspectives."

The resurfaced footage shows civilians evacuating the North Tower.

Another resurfaced video shows the first-hand accounts from two firefighters discussing what happened at the 'terrible' event that made history back in 2001.

Two firefighters in full uniform can be heard speaking about the devastation they've just witnessed inside the Twin Towers, saying: "We were in the lobby for the third explosion.

"The whole lobby collapsed on us."

An off-screen voice asked: "What was it like?"

"Horrible," one of the firefighters answered, while his colleague said: "It was like hell, you don't want to know."

The North Tower was totally engulfed in smoke and flames.

"We were inside waiting to go upstairs," one of the firefighters explained, "and on the way upstairs, the whole f***ing plane blew and it just collapsed inside the lobby."

The firefighter said the whole thing was 'terrible'.

He went on to state there was a 'third' explosion after that, adding: "Everybody was inside the building waiting to go upstairs and they just let loose.

"Everything just let loose inside the building."

He carried on: "We came in after the fire, we came when the fire was going on already.

"We were in the staging area inside the building waiting to go upstairs."

He went on to recall that 'everybody tried to make their way out' following the explosion.

Among the 2,977 people who died in the horrific attack, 343 firefighters were among those who tragically lost their lives.
