Donald Trump gave a speech at a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday (May 26), boasting that he has 'everything' to the families who have lost people through war.

Trump was joined by Vice President JD Vance at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia yesterday to mark Memorial Day across the US.

The president's speech veered off into remarks about how much he was looking forward to the US hosting major sporting events in the next few years, along with a military parade next month through Washington, D.C.

Trump dubbed the parade, which marks 250 years of the US Army and falls on the president's own birthday, a 'big, big celebration', and went on to say: "I’m glad I missed that second term where it was because I wouldn’t be your president."

The president added: "In addition, we have the World Cup and we have the Olympics. Can you imagine I missed that four years? And now look what I have I have everything - amazing the way things work out."

The US will host the soccer World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada in 2026, while the Olympics comes to Los Angeles in 2028.

Trump's comments have been met with a fair bit of criticism online, with many pointing out the 'having everything' line was probably inappropriate for the context.

One Twitter user said: "On Memorial Day, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Donald Trump brags about the World Cup, the Olympics and the 250 year anniversary of the start of the Revolution. Disgrace has lost its meaning."

A second added: "While families are honoring their loved ones today, the President brags during his speech at Arlington."

While a third simply quipped about the speech: "What a disgrace."

To mark memorial day, Trump took to Truth Social to pay his respects to those lost through war, while he also slammed his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Trump wrote all in caps: "Happy Memorial Day to all, including the scum that spent the last four years trying to destroy our country through warped radical left minds, who allowed 21,000,000 million people to illegally enter our country, many of them being criminals and the mentally insane, through an open border that only an incompetent president would approve.

"But fear not, we have made great progress over the last 4 months, and America will soon be safe and great again! Again, happy Memorial Day, and God bless America!"

In his speech, Trump also hit out at 'unchecked' migration that took place under the Biden administration.

Describing the Biden presidency as a 'hard four years', he added: "Who would let that happen? People pouring through our borders unchecked. People doing things that are indescribable and not for today to discuss."
