Bronny James, the son of basketball star LeBron James, had to be rushed to hospital this week after suffering a cardiac arrest during basketball practice in California.

Bronny was practicing at the University of Southern California when he suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday (24 July), after which he was rushed to hospital.

Bronny is the eldest of James' three children, at 18-years-old. He also has a younger brother, Bryce Maximus James, 16, and a sister, Zhuri Nova, 8.

The James family addressed Bronny's health in a statement shared with TMZ, saying: "(Monday) while practicing Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest. Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital."

The statement went on to assure that Bronny is now in a stable condition, and is no longer in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping, which prevents blood from reaching the brain and other vital organs.

It is considered a medical emergency, and can regularly lead to death.

The James' statement continued: "We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information."

It added that Bronny's parents, LeBron and mum Savannah, wished to 'publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.'

Bronny's health issues come just weeks after basketball draft experts began to share their thoughts about where Bronny may be drafted in the 2024 NBA Draft.

ESPN's draft expert, Jonathan Givony, appeared on SportsCenter to share his thoughts about the 18-year-old, saying: “Bronny James is the No. 17 projected player in our draft class tomorrow.

“He has a very high floor because of his brain, his defensive instincts, he can make spot-up jumpers, his feel for the game, his competitiveness... Bronny James is as improved a player as any prospect in this class.”

Bronny's dad has previously spoken about how his kids have helped him grow, both in his personal life and in his career, as he told Tim Ferriss' podcast: "What I've learned is to get the best out of my three kids, I can't approach them all the same way because they all have different personalities.

"They all are different, and I had to find out how to tap into each one of my kids to get the same results but teach them differently, and that's the same with being the leader of a basketball team or a franchise."
