Potatoes are commonly known to be some of the most versatile foods out there, offering up everything from crunchy crisps to creamy mash; but just when you think we've found all their uses, people have started making potato milk.

Cast your mind back a few years and the notion of drinking almonds and oats would have caused a lot of confusion and raised eyebrows, not to mention the complaints about new and 'unnecessary' trends touted by 'today's youth'.

Admittedly we do still get those kinds of reactions nowadays, but in general there tends to be a lot more support for those who opt for plant-based alternatives in their tea, coffee or cereal. Even some of the most dedicated dairy fans have started to test the water with oat or coconut milk, but as someone who regularly opts for milk alternatives, I think it's fair to say that people will need a bit more convincing when it comes to trying potato milk.

You can see the unusual alternative below:

News of potato milk was shared on TikTok last year by user @thegreencreator, but this week The Cut reported that a number of outlets have started stocking the product over the last few months.

The liquid is created by blending potatoes along with water, sugar and a few other ingredients before straining the mixture to create the 'milk'.

Alongside footage of her making her own potato milk, The Green Creator claimed that potato milk is 'far more sustainable' than other plant-based milk alternatives due to the fact that growing potatoes is a very sustainable practice, with The Cut noting the starchy plants take up 'about half as much land as growing oats, and [use] one-56th as much water as almonds'.

The TikToker described the milk as being 'actually pretty good', though others didn't seem so convinced as they responded to the notion online, where one person wrote: 'POTATO MILK ??? this is probably the furthest we've strayed from God.'

Another confused social media user commented: 'What in Satan’s name is potato milk??'

The product currently appears to be sold commercially only by one company, named Dug, and though there are plenty of sceptics out there it has apparently proved to be a hit in Europe, and is expected to soon hit the shelves in America and the UK soon, Forbes reports.

There's no denying that it will take some getting used to for many, but just like we came to accept oat, almond and even pea milk, maybe potato milk will have its day.
