A Texas man has died after lighting a firework on top of his head while celebrating Independence Day with his friends.

Pablo Ruiz, 43, died on Tuesday (5 July) morning. The San Antonio resident had been drinking with friends when he decided to place a firework on his head.

He had severe head injuries was unresponsive when medics arrived at the property, according to the Houston Chronicle, and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

UNILAD has approached the San Antonio Police Department for comment.

On Tuesday, Newsweek reported that several firework-related deaths had occurred across the US during Independence Day celebrations.

On 4 July, police attended a home in Montebello, California, where a man was found unresponsive in the front garden of a property.

It was later discovered that the man - who died in hospital - had been using illegal-grade fireworks, resulting in the accident.

On Sunday (3 July) an 11-year-old boy in Indiana died after sustaining injuries during what police called a ‘fireworks incident’.

Camrynn Ray McMichael of Mount Vernon died while being transported to hospital and police were first called to his home at 9:44 pm.

A press release issued by Indiana State Police read: “Posey County – Indiana State Police, Mt. Vernon Police and the Posey County Coroner are currently investigating a fireworks incident that claimed the life of an 11-year-old Mt. Vernon boy.

“Last night at approximately 9:42 p.m., Posey County 911 Dispatch received a call regarding a child being seriously injured from a fireworks incident at 932 N. Canal Street in Mt. Vernon. The child died while being transported to an Evansville Hospital.

“This is an on-going investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.”

Also in Indiana, a man was injured and subsequently died after holding a fireworks show for his neighbours in Fort Wayne. Despite a local nurse trying to perform CPR on the man, he passed away.

On Monday, an 18-year-old suffered ‘major wounds to his face’ in Minnesota after fireworks exploded near his head.

Police responded to the incident at around 1.30am local time but the teenager was later pronounced dead in hospital.

UNILAD has approached police departments for comment on each incident.
