Two teenagers arrested after failing to steal car with manual transmission

Two Maryland teenagers, aged 16 and 17, approached a driver at a gas station and tried and failed to steal his manual transmission car.

An attempted carjacking proved fruitless for two teens who were unable to drive away from the scene thanks to the car's gear stick.

You can watch hilarious footage of the attempted theft below:

The two teenagers were caught red handed trying - and failing - to steal a car they were unable to drive because of its manual transmission, a challenge the two juveniles clearly didn’t expect to face.

The whole faux pas was captured on video. The Montgomery County Police Department said in a statement that the carjacking took place on 25 March at 4.46pm at a gas station in Germantown, Maryland.

The failed carjacking unfolded when a the driver was pumping gas into his car at a Sunoco station.

Two teens, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, approached the man and opened the driver’s door and removed the man from the vehicle.

They demanded the keys and when the driver was forced to hand them over, the criminals climbed into the car.

But their plan soon took an unfortunate turn for them and a very fortunate turn for the poor driver, as the pair soon found out that the motor has a manual transmission.

The police department said: “The investigation by detectives determined that the adult male victim finished pumping his gas and attempted to enter his car when he observed the juveniles running towards him.

"The juveniles forced the door open, grabbed a hold of the victim and demanded his keys.

“The victim complied with the juveniles' demands. The juveniles entered the victim’s car and attempted to drive away.

"Unable to drive a manual transmission, the juveniles exited the vehicle and left the scene on foot."

According to CarMax, 96 percent of Americans drive automatics, which means most Americans have no idea how to use a clutch and probably think the biting point has something to do with food.

They were both captured and charged.

When the two teens realised they couldn’t drive the vehicle, they exited and ran away on foot.

Authorities spotted them at around 5pm and made efforts to capture them, but they managed to avoid being arrested.

Police officers then chased the pair on foot and managed to take them into custody.

Both suspects have been charged as adults, with one count of carjacking and one count of conspiracy carjacking. They are now being held in jail without bond.
