'Taylor Swift law' proposed in Brazil which would send ticket scalpers to prison with huge fines

After the Ticketmaster scandal last year, lawmakers are targeting ticket scalpers ahead of Taylor Swift's tour.

Given the huge influence Taylor Swift has, it’s unsurprising that the superstar would eventually inspire a law.

After the announcement of her world tour yesterday (June 20), Brazilian lawmakers are now considering a new bill which would see ticket scalpers get huge fines.

With the upcoming concerts expected to sell out in minutes, the law might help fans actually get seats to see the ‘Anti-hero’ singer live.

However, the Swifties are already preparing themselves for trouble after fans struggled to get tickets during the US leg of the Eras Tour.

As they logged into Ticketmaster to get the prized concert tickets, the website struggled to cope with the intense traffic last year.

Most were fans eager to see Swift perform live, however, some of the traffic were bots used by scalpers to get tickets and then resell at a huge markup.

According to the New York Post, tickets across all 52 dates were expected to retail for $49 (£41) and $449 (£377) – depending on the seat.

Despite this, fans were paying up to $1000 for last-minute tickets - with some concerts costing considerably more.

Having watched the scandal unfold last year, Brazil is now considering banning ticket scalpers who resold for a profit.

Dubbed the ‘Taylor Swift law’, the new act would also give harsh punishments to those who commit the offence facing four years in prison and mega fines too.

It’s hoped that those involved in scalping will stop after hearing about the new law.

Brazilian lawmakers also hope that it will make it easier for fans to see the ‘Style’ singer live - given the big demand for tickets.

Still, it doesn’t guarantee that Swifties will get a seat, and many might be left ‘screaming, crying’ over the highly anticipated concerts.

Ticketmaster has even warned fans that they could be disappointed and wrote in a statement: "We expect there will be more demand than there are tickets available.

"Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis while currently available inventory lasts."

For UK fans, you’ll need to register your interest in the tickets on Swift’s website before 11:59 BST tomorrow (22 June).

After that, tickets in London will on sale on 18 July, Edinburgh on 19 July and Cardiff on 20 July.
