As a veteran of the entertainment industry, Whoopi Goldberg has seen it all. However, the EGOT winner has been less than impressed with US recent shows, especially reality TV.

Whilst you may thought she would take aim at The Kardashians or Love is Blind, however, the 67-year-old decided to lash out at American Idol calling it the 'downfall of society'.

The View host made the comments whilst appearing in the upcoming documentary: Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me.

Released in the US earlier this month, the Netlfix documentary looks in the life of the late Playboy and Guess model as she rose to fame during the 90s.

The documentary also touches upon Smith’s reality series, The Anna Nicole Show, with many speaking about the often bizarre series.

Included in this was Goldberg, with the Sister Act actor reflecting on Nicole Smith’s tragically short life and her life as a tabloid star – according to Deadline.

During this, the panellist reflected on the impact of reality TV and it’s stars.

In a candid moment, she pointedly told filmmakers: “You have Basketball Wives, you have the Housewives of whatever, all the Bravo shows, giving you the impression that you’re doing something wrong because you’re living your life.”

As the interview progressed, Goldberg expressed her concern, saying that the audiences watched these shows to make themselves ‘feel better’ adding that ‘people like to be judgy’.

Whilst viewers of reality TV may agree to disagree with talk show host, she then took aim at one show in particular – even calling it the ‘downfall of society’.

“I think that we, as a society, love to watch stuff to judge folks. I’ve always thought that the beginning of the downfall of society was with, what’s the name of that show?” she argued, adding: “American Idol?”

Though this may be a little harsh, the A-Lister continued to hit out at reality shows as she explained how much she disliked how many shows had sprung up over the last decade.

“Once we gave people the ability to judge other people, I think we ran amok with it, and it’s gone out of control,” she pointedly said.

“They invited the public to decide who that person was, and I feel once we did that, it began us in a cycle which we have not [gotten out of].”

Whilst we may love tuning into the latest series of Love is Blind, we can’t help but wonder whether Goldberg is on to something.
