The Simpsons has been on our screens since 1989 and is seemingly showing no signs of stopping anytime soon, despite the fact that a lot of fans reckon it’s past its best.

And after watching a recent episode, some viewers believe it would have been the perfect time to bow out with a storyline looping back to the 1990s.

Now, Homer has ended up in hospital more times than most, but cast your mind back to the December 1990 episode 'Bart the Daredevil', in which Homer ends up seriously injured after tumbling down the gorge. Check it out below:

Well, in the 731st episode - yeah, there really has been that many - which aired last weekend, Homer once again woke up in a hospital bed.

As he comes to, his family inform him that he’s been in a coma since he fell down the gorge two days earlier.

So everything that happened since the Bart the Daredevil episode was actually just a dream Homer had while in a coma.

In the scene, a confused Homer tries to get his head around what he’s being told, asking: “Two days? But I had so many adventures - more than 700.”

To which Marge reassures him: “Those were all coma dreams. None of them really happened.”

Homer then lists numerous storylines from the past couple of decades, asking his family: “I never had a pet lobster? I never went to space? What about the Halloweens?” Indeed.

Showing an impressive feat of creativity, the show’s creators managed to perfectly emulate the early 90s cartoon design, which has changed drastically over the years.

Fans thought the unusual episode would have been a nice place for The Simpsons to finally wrap up, with one saying on Twitter: “This would've been the perfect way to end the show. Wasted.”

Another commented: “This would be such an amazing ending to the show," while a third posted: “Petition to make this the actual canon ending of The Simpsons.”

The animators even replicated the old style drawings.

But not everyone agreed, another fan posted: “If The Simpsons ended like this I would be sick to my stomach. This is a lazy way to end a show.”

Fans have speculated for years on how the show might end - with Homer being in a coma one particularly popular theory - and last year, long-time Simpsons’ writer Al Jean shared how he would end it.

Speaking with the Radio Times, Jean revealed the show would likely tie up the way it began, taking us right back to the Christmas pageant.

He said: “I mentioned that there would be an ending where the last episode, they’d be going back to the Christmas pageant from the first episode [Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire], so that the whole series was a continuous loop – that’s how I would end it, if I had to.”
