Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has admitted his regret over one of the show's jokes that aired in its first series.

With more than two decades under its belt, it's safe to say there are a lot of jokes that exist in the Family Guy universe.

There are the more simple laughs that come in the form of fart jokes and misunderstandings, as well as long-running and more controversial jokes, most of which have their own time and place in the long-running series.

However, there are also those which don't really stand the test of time, and now looking back, MacFarlane has admitted that there are some he probably wouldn't do now.

See one such joke below. Warning: Contains content some viewers may find offensive:

In an interview for the USA Network talk show Out of Character with Krista Smith, MacFarlane recalled one joke in particular which took place in the very first season of the show.

He explained: “There have been jokes that I would have rather we not have done. The JFK Pez Dispenser was something I would probably not do now.”

For those of you who were far too young to watch Family Guy at its inception, the JFK joke took place in the first series of the show all the way back in 1999. It showed a child running out of a shop, showing off his new John F. Kennedy Pez Dispenser, but the head of the toy quickly gets shot off by a police sniper.

At that point, the child whips out another dispenser, saying: "Good thing I still have my Bobby Kennedy Pez Dispenser.”

MacFarlane said he probably wouldn't do the JFK joke nowadays.

Former president John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he drove through downtown Dallas on 22 November, 1963, five years before his brother, who was known by the nickname Bobby, was assassinated in June 1968.

And MacFarlane isn't the only one to take issue with some of the jokes told on Family Guy, as the creator also explained that actor Adrian Brody once 'got very upset with [him] at a party about a joke' the show made about him.

“I felt horrible," the Ted actor said, "Because I actually think he’s a tremendously gifted actor. If you’re going to take a stab at somebody — even a celebrity, it can’t be just mean, it also has to be funny or they have to really, really deserve it.”

Though not all of the jokes go down well, Family Guy has obviously had enough success to keep it going over the years, with the show currently in its 21st season.
