Rian Johnson is ‘pissed off’ about the Glass Onion's title

The director revealed he wanted ‘A Knives Out Mystery’ excluded from the film's title.

Knives Out director Rian Johnson has revealed the title of the flick’s sequel has ‘p***ed him off’, and he desperately wanted to change it.

The acclaimed director recently sat down with The Atlantic to discuss his new film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

When asked if Johnson would continue with the franchise, he admitted that he wanted to change the film’s title to have each movie exist independently.

Instead, he opted to exclude ‘A Knives Out Mystery’ from the title, but producers weren’t having a bar of it.

He said: “I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained. Honestly, I’m p***ed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title. You know? I want it to just be called Glass Onion.

“I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time. But there’s a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialized storytelling.”

Before making Knives Out, Johnson had just directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

And, like his whodunnit flick, Johnson also revealed wanted to give Star Wars some sort of ‘ending’ despite the film being in the middle of the trilogy.

He explained: "This whole poisonous idea of creating [intellectual property] has completely seeped into the bedrock of storytelling. Everyone is just thinking, ‘How do we keep milking it?’ I love an ending where you burn the Viking boat into the sea."

Since Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was released in late November, it's been met with commercial and critical praise.

It's even managed to snag up a few Golden Globe nominations ahead of the awards ceremony on January 10.

However, this won’t be the last time we see the franchise grace our screens, as the filmmaker shared that he already has plans for a third.

When asked about a potential threequel, Johnson told Newsweek: "[I'm] just starting to put together and kind of figure out what would be exciting, figure out what would feel scary in the right way.

"Like what would be something that also will be completely different from this movie? The way that this movie was different from the first one."

He added: "That, to me, is the whole reason, the notion of doing more of these feels exciting is that they can truly be something new every time."
