It's not often that a movie is still winning over fans more than two decades after it first hit the cinemas.

However, a comedy from 2003, starring Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning, has been hailed as 'quite literally the greatest film ever made'.

When it was released over 20 years ago, it took in $44.6 million at the box office, but it seems it's heartwarming storyline has made a long-lasting impact on viewers.

It centers around Molly (played by Murphy) who is a spoiled, immature young woman who lives as if she were a fairytale princess in New York City. Her father, a popular rock guitarist, died in a plane crash with her mother when she was little and she was left with a fortune.

When Molly's accountant vanishes with her inheritance, she is left with nothing but debts and must work to survive.

With no previous experience or marketable skills, she is hired to be Lorraine 'Ray' Schleine's (Fanning) babysitter.

Their close relationship eventually makes Molly reach maturity and Ray act like the eight-year-old she is.

And it's clear fans still love the film, called Uptown Girls.

One shared the moment that Molly and Ray first met on X and wrote: "Quite literally the greatest film ever made."

Many firmly agreed, as another person replied: "It's not even an exaggeration."

"Original boss queen," said a third.

A fourth added: "One of my favorites, so sad but so heartwarming."

Others took the moment to mourn the late Brittany Murphy, who died aged 32 just six years after Uptown Girls was released.

One user commented: "I love Brittany. Her performance was so earnest in this movie. She was so young and adorable."

Despite its rave reviews, Uptown Girls only a 13 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer. However, it does have a 61 percent audience score.

One film fan wrote on the review aggregator site: "Adorable and charming movie, pulled at my heartstrings and made me laugh."

Someone else put: "Very realistic and such a beautiful movie. Amazing acting and true feelings."

And a final review read: "Charming and touching movie. (Also, this movie's rotten tomatoes critic reception shows just how wrong critics get it sometimes. One of the best movies of its decade)."
