Sir Michael Caine has officially announced his retirement from acting but what a career it has been in film for the 90-year-old.

The British acting legend has a lengthy and impressive resume with more than 150 acting roles across a career spanning eight decades.

Caine has also picked up many accolades during his career, including two Oscars, three Golden Globes and even a knighthood.

And at the remarkable age of 90, Caine's latest role is in The Greatest Escaper, a true story, where legendary actor plays the role of British World War II Royal Navy veteran, Bernard Jordan, who escaped from his care home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France.

The Great Escaper has proved to be a hit with critics and currently holds a very respectable 7.9 on IMDB and a 79 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

And it now appears that Caine has decided to conclude his career with The Great Escaper, truly ending his remarkable run on a high.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4, The Dark Knight star revealed: "I keep saying I'm going to retire. Well I am now."

Caine was seen as the perfect choice to play the 89-year-old Navy vet, though he now admits that opportunities are few and far between, so he's decided to end his career on a high note.

He continued: "The only parts I'm likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, 'Well, I might as well leave with all this — I've got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?'"

Despite that, Caine said that it's important that older characters feature in movies - which was partially why the famed actor had decided to stick around for so long.

"With me, it's not quite as diminishing as you think," he added.

"I'm 90, and I remember when I was young talking to old men of 90 and they weren't a little bit like me. They were little tiny old men with humped shoulders… And I thought, 'I'm not like that and it's changed."

While he may now be done with acting, Caine is now turning his hands to the books with the release of his debut thriller, Deadly Game.

Speaking earlier this year, Caine said: “It's been my ambition for years to write a thriller.

"It's the genre I most love to read and I've really got a buzz out of working on Deadly Game and teaming up with Hodder once again to publish it."
