An episode of TODAY turned 'awkward' when host Craig Melvin pressed Bobby Cannavale about his relationship with Rose Byrne.

The Watcher star sat down with Melvin earlier today (May 27) to discuss his upcoming movie Ezra, however, the interview took an uncomfortable turn when the 54-year-old actor was questioned about his 'imminent wedding' to Bridesmaids star Byrne.

Prepare for your skin to prickle in second-hand embarrassment:

After speaking with the actor about the film being a coming-of-age story about 'what one needs to do to become their best self' for both the adults and kids in the film, Melvin decided to bring up Cannavale's 'real life partner' Byrne - who's also in the film.

In a clip of the show posted to YouTube, the host asks: "This is like the eighth or ninth time you guys have worked together, based on what I saw. What is that like? How do you balance working on-screen with someone [...] and then going home?"

Cannavale explains the movie was shot locally in New York and New Jersey which was a plus, alongside how the pair's two kids 'know where they are at all times when [they're] working together'.

He adds they take the kids with them 'wherever' they go and just have to be good with their 'scheduling,' resolving it's 'always a good time' working with his partner, who 'makes [him] laugh like no one else'.

However, Melvin's nosing into the pair's relationship unfortunately doesn't end there.

The host delves deeper, bringing up an interview Bryne allegedly gave last year, saying the pair's wedding is 'imminent' - Cannavale and Byrne have been together for over a decade but are not officially married.

Awkwardly, Cannavale doesn't seem to know what the host is talking about, questioning that his partner said that, before adding: "I didn't see that."

And when Melvin offers to read the quotes out to him, the actor simply replies: "Nah that's alright."

The pair then erupt into awkward laughter, with Cannavale looking around at the rest of the studio, appearing quite lost for words.

Melvin quickly wraps the interview up and Cannavale can be heard awkwardly laughing in the background - but the actor still shakes the host's hand nevertheless.

And well, one viewer summed it all up perfectly, commenting on the clip on YouTube: "Well that ending was awkward......"
