A newly released survival thriller on Netflix has sent fans into a frenzy as they realize it's based on a terrifying true story.

Christmas season is officially over meaning we can trade in all the festive flicks for some good old doom and gloom.

And it seems Netflix has got us covered with one of its latest releases, which has been heaped with praise since it landed on the streaming platform from both critics and fans alike.

The film Society of Snow has captivated fans as it gives an eerier look into a 1972 Uruguayan rugby team plane crash that saw those onboard forced to resort to cannibalism to survive after being stranded on the Andes mountains.

Netflix’s summary of the flick barely hints at the awful conditions they had to deal with in order to survive.

“Following a plane crash in the remote heart of the Andes, survivors join forces and become each other's best hope as they navigate their way back home,” the summary reads.

Following 90 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts an impressive 90 percent on the site's Tomatometer, while on IMDb the film bagged an equally respectable score of 7.9.

The Spanish film directed by J.A. Bayona dropped on Netflix on January 4 and social media users have insisted it's one of the best films they’ve ever seen.

“Being Spain's International Selection for the 2024 Oscars and receiving nominations for Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards definitely speaks to its quality and impact,” one user wrote on X.

“SOCIETY OF THE SNOW is now on Netflix! It's incredible, with phenomenal sound design and a beautiful score.

“As much as I loved Alive when I was young, this is a much better retelling of the same story. The plane crash and avalanche are both crushingly terrifying,” another added.

“Just watched “Society of the Snow” - if this isn’t Oscar worthy, I don’t know what is,” commented another.

The director also couldn’t help but share some of the praise he's been getting for the flick.

Sharing on his own X page he quoted a report from the L’Info Tout Court publication: “Society of the Snow can already boast of being one of the best films we will see this year. Juan Antonio Bayona proves once again that he is one of the best directors today, offering nothing less than one of the most memorable survival films of recent times, finally returning his credentials to an incredible true story, where the human condition and emotion come together to shake us to our core. Excellent."

Society of the Snow is streaming on Netflix now.
