Netflix viewers have pointed out major issue after spotting plot hole in Leave The World Behind

The director has spoken out

No matter how great you create something, there will always been eagled-eyed viewers there to spot even the tiniest mistake.

This year has been booming for new TV shows and films, especially on the popular streaming site, Netflix.

We’ve seen a plethora of crime, Christmas and horror flicks grace our screens, but it appears that the latest movie has encountered a little blip after viewers noticed something didn’t quite add up.

It was only this weekend that Netflix released thriller Leave The World Behind, which stars the amazing Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke as husband and wife in this apocalyptic nightmare.

Depicting their family trying to navigate societal collapse, it’s a spooky thought for those who dare to watch, but some people have spotted a plot hole.

Considering it a major plot hole, one of the ongoing themes in the flick is that Roberts’ on-screen daughter Rose has an obsession with the TV show Friends, and even though they are going through a crazy end-of-the-world event, she’s determined on finding a way to watch the last episode.

However, it’s not uncommon knowledge that Roberts appeared on the show in season two episode 'The One After The Super Bowl' where she played Chandler’s love interest.

So, wouldn’t Rose have seen her mother in her favorite show if she has reached this far in the series?

That’s what many fans of the show have been questioning online, as they wonder why this hasn’t been addressed in the show.

One person took to X (formerly Twitter) to ask the obvious question: "If Rose from Leave The World Behind was obsessed with Friends that means at some point during S02E12 (The One After the Superbowl) she was probably like, '…Mom?'"

Another asked: "With Rose’s obsession with ‘Friends’ in ‘Leave The World Behind’, wouldn’t she have recognised her own mom was in the episode ‘The One After The Superbowl’?"

A third commenter stated: "The Friends-obsessed girl in Leave the World Behind had absolutely nothing to say about her mom showing up in an episode. Not. One. Word."

Someone else said: "The daughter watching Friends on her iPad in Leave the World Behind is going to have her mind blown when Julia Roberts turns up."

However, there is no need to worry as the director of the film spoke to The Messenger about Friends and Roberts playing both roles.

Fans have spotted a potential plot hole as the Friends universe collides.

Sam Esmail explained that they are two different universes, and that to Rose, Amanda is just her mother and could resemble other people in the world.

He said: "On a purely intellectual level, in this universe, Julia Roberts is not playing Amanda. There's just Rose's mom, Amanda Sanford."

"And on the show, she sees Julia Roberts, and maybe she has a passing resemblance to her mom, but because it's her mom, she probably doesn't think twice about it. So that's my weird, meta-convoluted explanation for it."

He also explained that he wanted to see how Roberts would react to the inclusion of her past character, citing that they smiled every time it came up.

"When Julia read the script, of course, I was so curious about her reaction, and, ultimately, I think we all smile every time we realised the connection. In that way, emotionally, it even adds to the satisfaction.

So, apparently the plot hole is no more.
