New Marvel series being compared to John Wick and Breaking Bad as first trailer drops

Marvel's latest show trailer has been praised for taking a darker approach and has even been compared to John Wick and Breaking Bad.

Marvel's trailer for the show Echo has delighted fans and been compared to John Wick and Breaking Bad.

It's no secret Marvel's Phase 4 has struggled to reach the mountain peak successes it had in previous years.

Some have chopped this up to superhero fatigue or a shift from Disney to focus on both television as well as cinema releases.

Whatever the reason, some fans have expressed their delight at a possibly new darker direction the house of mouse is taking.

The trailer for the show Echo dropped on Friday (November 3, and elated fans have suggested this could be a return to form.

"It’s a little on the grittier side for Marvel, and shows the breadth of what Marvel is capable of,” said Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s studio’s head of streaming, television and animation.

“It is sort of a new direction for the brand, especially for Disney+,” he added according to an article by the Hollywood Reporter.

Explaining the Hollywood Reporter was among multiple press groups granted a preview of some scenes from the show, the tonal shift was described as having hints of Daredevil, Breaking Bad and John Wick.

All three of these franchises have proved immensely popular over the years, and refused to shy away from violence, darker themes or difficult subject matter.

The show is expected to mark Marvel Studios first TV-MA rating, and will debut on Disney+ as well as streaming service Hulu in January 2024.

The new show is set to star Alaqua Cox reprising her role as Maya Lopez/Echo from Hawkeye. The trailer also shows Vincent D’ONofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin as a seemingly integral character, and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil even makes a brief appearance in the short trailer.

Fans on YouTube voiced their tentative high expectations for the show, while also stating they are hesitantly optimistic.

The show is expected to mark Marvel Studios first TV-MA rating.

“I was not expected this to be TVMA & that makes me much more excited. Marvel needs some mature storytelling for the more mature fans. Hella stoked,” one YouTube user wrote.

“This is what the MCU DESPERATELY needs right now. A small scale character driven story, that’s mature in tone and theme,” another added.

“If the show is as good as this trailer, this will definitely be a win for Marvel and Disney, and hopefully this will set them in a better direction going forward.

“I know trailers are never an indication of the actual quality of the show but this trailer has finally given me some interest into this show,” another user commented.
