Ke Huy Quan has been away from acting for 20 years. Yet, there's that old adage: Goonies never say die.

In 1984, Quan starred as Indiana Jones' peppy sidekick Short Round in The Temple of Doom. Two years later, he was further enshrined in cinematic legend as Data, the scrappy tech-wiz of The Goonies.

He made a number of small appearances in other projects, such as Tales from the Crypt and Red Pirate. However, after 2002, he disappeared from Hollywood altogether. Get ready: he's back.

Quan has returned in Everything Everywhere All at Once, A24's wacky contribution to the multiverse. It stars Michelle Yeoh as 'an exhausted Chinese American woman who can't seem to finish her taxes', with Quan playing her husband.

In an interview with People, Quan spoke about his anticipated return to the big screen, sparked by watching 2018's Crazy Rich Asians.

He said: "I was happy working behind the camera but I had serious FOMO. I wanted to be up there with my fellow Asian actors!

"When I read the script I thought it was written for me because they are me. I understood every single one of them.

"I don't think I could have played Waymond had you given me the role 10, 15 years ago. Looking back upon my life, all the highs and lows, I reached deep within me to pour my entire life into these three different characters."

While keen to forge a fresh screen legacy, he's immensely grateful for his past roles. "For many, many years people recognised me only as a child [actor] because that was pretty much the last time they saw me up on the screen," he said.

"I'm hoping when people see me now they go, 'Oh my God! You're Waymond from Everything Everywhere All at Once - and you were also in Indiana Jones [and] Goonies.'"

He still keeps in touch with his Goonies co-stars, particularly Chunk's Jeff Cohen, now an entertainment lawyer who represents Quan.

Quan said: "We'll be friends for life. He's my Goonies brother.

"In fact, my [Everything Everywhere] producer told me a really funny story the other day. He said never in his life did he think that he would have to talk to Chunk to get Data to be in his movie. I thought that was hilarious."

Everything Everywhere All At Once is in UK cinemas from 13 May.
