Just a few weeks after confirming he'll return to the big screen as Wolverine, fans are begging Hugh Jackman to revive his character Van Helsing.

The Aussie star, 54, first played Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men and its sequels and prequels over the next 17 years, culminating in 2017’s Logan.

In between stints as Wolverine, Jackman starred as Gabriel Van Helsing the vampire slayer in the 2004 film Van Helsing. And nearly two decades after the film came out, fans are still begging for more.

Although the film received lukewarm reviews – it has a modest 24 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes – it managed to gross $300 million worldwide against a budget of $160-170 million and has cemented its status as a cult horror classic.

Directed and written by Stephen Sommers, Van Helsing’s titular character was based on the Dutch vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker’s iconic novel Dracula.

Hugh Jackman starred as Van Helsing in 2004.
Universal Pictures.

Sommers includes a number of spooky monsters, such as Count Dracula and other vampires, Frankenstein’s monster, Duergar, Mr. Hyde and werewolves.

Van Helsing was released the same year as the hotly anticipated X-Men sequel, X-2, and despite having a video game, an animated prequel and a comic book, Van Helsing never quite became a fully fledged franchise.

Jackman would become preoccupied with all the future X-Men films on the horizon at the time, including a trilogy dedicated solely to Wolverine's origins.

Van Helsing fans have seemingly been given new hope for a revival after Jackman confirmed he would once again pick up is claws in Deadpool 3.

One Twitter user asked: “Yeah Hugh Jackman came back to play Wolverine but when is he coming back to play Van Helsing?”

A second viewer tweeted: “Universal needs to bring back Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing. If I can think of ideas as to how you can make a sequel to Van Helsing a story that will bring his journey to an end then I am sure they must be thinking something after that Deadpool 3 announcement.”

While someone else confessed: “My hot take is that I'd rather Hugh Jackman return to play Van Helsing again than Wolverine.”

Other fans have been reminiscing about Jackman’s Van Helsing because of Halloween.

“Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman god tier of a movie,” one person on Twitter declared.

Another review stated: “I said it when this came out and I’m still saying it now, Van Helsing is f***ing badass. The transformation of Van Helsing and Dracula? Their big battle? All the OG monsters?! Hugh Jackman?! Yes please.”
