Hugh Jackman has made a shocking confession about the time he lost control of his bladder and suffered an embarrassing accident on stage.

The 57-year-old Australian actor, famous for his portrayal of Wolverine across the X-Men film franchise and Marvel Cinematic Universe, is also renowned for his roles on stage.

In 1995, he played Gaston in the Australian production of Beauty and the Beast followed by Joe Gillis in the 1996 show of Sunset Boulevard.

Jackman went on to earn a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for his performance as Curly McLain in the West End revival of Oklahoma! two years later, followed by a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award and Emmy Award and not forgetting his Golden Globe for his role as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables in 2019.

So it's fair to say the New South Wales actor has earned his stripes in front of the camera and in theatre.

However, the father-of-two has recently come clean about a time quite early on in his career where he suffered a mishap that soaked him through, mid-way through performing in front of a live audience.

Speaking on Howard Stern's Sirius XM show, Jackman said he had been dealing with persistent headaches around the time of Beauty and the Beast which saw a medic tell him to drink more water.

"He said, 'you're dehydrated. You gotta drink a lot, you gotta drink a lot of water, drink it before five o'clock, like two litres of water,'" Jackman explained, leaving him to guzzle down two gallons.

"The first song I sing, 'You've been dreaming just one dream', was so hard to get through. I had to pick her up, I had to drag her around, I had to sing," he continued. "As I picked Belle up, a little bit of p**s came out and I'm wearing red tights. And then I thought, uh oh."

Jackman said his co-star soon realized something was amiss as he had stopped singing and was 'just marching around.'

The actor then said he had a tough call to make: whether to pass up on delivering the top note in the song or to do it and risk publicly wetting himself.

"At the end of the song, I had a choice. You sing that F sharp and I either sing it, p**s my pants, or I don't sing it and humiliate myself," Jackman said. "So I sang it and it was just going, it was just going the whole way."

Yet as luck would have it, his accident wasn't visible to the audience.

"And I immediately, instead of taking my bow, I turned upstage. I just jumped around and I looked down and there was nothing," he explained, before joking his costume must have been like a 'wetsuit' that absorbed the fluid and sent it straight to his shoes.

"I'm like laughing to myself thinking my boot is filled with p**s, both boots filled with p**s."
