While he might be known for his iconic bad guy roles in Breaking Bad or The Mandalorian, it turns out Giancarlo Esposito wants to be the good guy for a change.

Sitting down to chat on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Better Call Saul baddie revealed he is keen to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Did you just hear a collective gasp for air? Well, that came from the corner of MCU fans who have had Esposito on their dream cast list for, like, ever.

Esposito told host Jimmy Fallon he has his eyes set on the ultimate prize when it comes to good guy roles: Charles Xavier from the X-Men.

"I want to play a good guy," Esposito said. "Charles is smart. He's good.

"But I feel as if there may be some mileage with me and Marvel. I know I love what they do. I know I love creativity."

Esposito added: "So who knows what could happen? Keep putting it out there"

The actor was responding to online fan campaigns that have been calling for him to be cast in the next phase of Marvel films.

Many believe he would be perfect as the iconic, steadfast leader of the X-Men.

Others, meanwhile, have called for him to step into the shoes of Magneto, Xavier's fierce nemesis and all round very bad guy.

This isn't the first time he's expressed his wish to be included in the MCU fun.

He said at the 2022 TJH Superhero Car Show & Comic Con in San Antonio, Texas, he'd love to see himself in Charles Xavier's shoes.

As per a TikTok video filmed at the event, Esposito said: "I have not worked for Marvel yet. I’ve been in the room with them and talked to them."

He added: "I’m gonna go for something that’s a little bit different. I’m gonna go and put it out in the universe that [I’d like to play] Professor X."

So if he's been in the room with Marvel and is repeatedly putting it out into the universe, surely that is a good sign.

Here's hoping, anyway.

Fans were keen to see him flip things around to take on a goodie role for a change.

One social media user commented: "Giancarlo Esposito as Professor X Charles Xavier? Bring it on, [President of Marvel Studios] Kevin Feige."

Another said: "He certainly deserves to play a good guy, but I think we'd all be waiting for a heel-turn from Professor X."

Others were more keen to see him do what we know he does best - a bad guy - adding: "He'd make a better Magneto."

Well, looks like we'll just have to watch this space to see what happens next.
