The first teaser for Christopher Nolan's new film Oppenheimer has been released ahead of its arrival next year.

Starring Peaky Blinders' Cillian Murphy as J Robert Oppenheimer, the film takes a look at the scientist's role in devising the atomic bomb during WWII.

Oppenheimer will mark Nolan's first biographical drama following his success with fictional titles such as The Dark Knight, Tenet and Interstellar, while Murphy will be taking on the role following his character's explosive end in the Peaky Blinders series.

A theoretical physicist, Oppenheimer became known as 'the father of the Atomic bomb' following its creation, though it wasn't until afterwards that he realised just how devastating his creation would be.

The release of the teaser trailer comes following a dramatic poster for the film, which shows Murphy in character as he stands in front of a billowing orange cloud of smoke.

The film is based on his autobiography American Prometheus, a synopsis for which reads: "J. Robert Oppenheimer is one of the iconic figures of the twentieth century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb for his country in a time of war, and who later found himself confronting the moral consequences of scientific progress."

According to a report from Variety, the production has a budget of $100 million, with some of its famous faces having taken lower salaries for the chance to work with Nolan.

Starring alongside Murphy in the film are Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Emily Blunt; actors who could expect to make as much as $10 million to $20 million for a project. Instead, they're reported to be being paid $4 million each.

Blunt, who stars as Katherine 'Kitty' Oppenheimer, can be heard talking in the teaser, saying: “The world is changing, reforming. This is your moment.”

Possibly speaking after the scientist comes up with his disastrous invention, another character comments: "You gave them the power to destroy themselves."

We also hear Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Lewis Strauss, in action as he describes Oppenheimer as 'the most important man who ever lived… the man who moved the Earth.'

A timer on screen begins counting down, starting in the trailer 11 months, 24 days, 15 hours and 29 minutes, as it prepares to mark the day which is described as when 'the world forever changes'.

Dedicated fans can keep tabs on the countdown on the official Oppenheimer website, where the timer continues counting right down to the millisecond for when the film is set to be released on 21 July, 2023.
