Christopher Nolan has brutal response to Timothée Chalamet about why he cut a lot of his Interstellar scenes

Timothée Chalamet has previously addressed his disappointment about not being in Interstellar as much as he thought he would be, and now Christopher Nolan has revealed why that was the case.

Chalamet starred as Tom in the 2014 movie, the on-screen son of Matthew McConaughey. Since then Chalamet has landed huge roles in films like Marty Supreme, Wonka, Dune, and A Complete Unknown – but he hasn't always been a leading man.

When he landed the role of Tom in Interstellar, Chalamet proceeded to Google the movie to find that it was a story about a father and son. With this in mind, he thought he'd 'made it'.

Speaking at a Los Angeles screening of Interstellar on February 9, Chalament shared: "This was a script [Nolan’s brother Jonathan] wrote for Steven Spielberg.

"When I got the part, I Googled the project. The original story was about a father and his son, so I thought, ‘Oh man, I made it!’

"And then obviously they reworked it and young Tom was a smaller part, but that’s OK."

Nolan, who was sat with Chalamet when he made such remarks, then quipped to the 30-year-old actor (via Variety): "Never believe what you read online!"

Elsewhere in their discussion they touched on those heartbreaking videos that Cooper (McConaughey) watches of his children as they grow up.

Obviously these included parts with Chalamet, but Nolan admitted that he cut some of his scenes because of something he did that the director 'didn't particularly like'.

"When you were filming the messages from home, there was a particular thing where you were hitting a dark tone," Nolan said.

"It felt too much for me. I didn’t particularly like it. I told you about it and you went ahead and did whatever the f**k you wanted and carried on. But I was like, 'He knows what he wants to do and has an idea.'"

The critically acclaimed director continued: "It wasn’t about being stubborn. You had planned what you wanted to do. You planned your choices and you didn’t want to abandon that on a casual whim for me.

"You wanted to test that and challenge that and see if I kept coming back, which I didn’t. I’ll find a logic to that in the edit suite."

"And then you cut to Casey Affleck," Chalamet then interjected while laughing.

It's nice that Chalamet can see the funny side of things now, because the Hollywood star once admitted that he cried after watching Interstellar when he realized his part had been pared down.

Speaking about rubbing shoulders with his big name co-stars McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain, Chalamet said he felt like a 'fraud' since to be near them since he was so early on in his career.

He went on to say to Emma Stone in a 2018 'Actors on Actors' interview: "I saw [Interstellar] and loved it, but then I went home with my dad and wept for an hour because I just figured my part was bigger or something."
