Black Mirror fans have been left disappointed by new details about the number of episodes set to air in the upcoming sixth season of the Netflix show.

Considering almost four years have passed since the last season of Black Mirror arrived on our screens, it's safe to say fans have pretty high expectations for the next instalment.

With so much time to plan and prepare, a lot of people were no doubt expecting some of the best episodes yet - and while that might still be true, there just might not be quite as many episodes as you'd expect.

New details about the upcoming series arrived today (11 May), after the official Black Mirror Twitter account sprung back to life last month.

The account didn't confirm any specific details at the time, instead returning with a very on-brand post featuring nothing more than a cryptic message.

"What have we missed?" the post read.

The following day, the account deemed that fans were 'due an update' as it dropped a teaser trailer for the upcoming series, which is set to feature a range of familiar faces including Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul.

Aaron Paul stars in the new season of Black Mirror.

Other stars featuring in the new episodes include Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Myha’la Herrold, Rob Delaney, Josh Hartnett, Kate Mara, Paapa Essiedu, John Hannah, Himesh Patel and Rory Culkin, and you'd think so many characters would require a lot of screen time.

As it turns out, however, there will only be five episodes in the upcoming season.

The titles of each episode were released in a video today, and are set to be called 'Joan is Awful'; 'Loch Henry'; 'Beyond the Sea'; 'Mazey Day' and 'Demon 79'.

Netflix has promised the new season will be the 'most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet', with creator Charlie Brooker teasing that the latest offering would include elements he has 'previously sworn blind the show would never do'.

Nevertheless, a lot of fans have been left angry at the lack of episodes it contains.

"Only 5 episodes after how long we’ve waited for a new season…? You hate our guts just say it," one disappointed fan wrote.

Another commented: "That’s it?!? Five episodes."

Entertainment Weekly offered some insights to each episode, starting with Joan is Awful which follows an average woman who discovers a streaming platform has launched a prestige TV drama adaptation of her life, starring Hayek.

Loch Henry follows a couple who travel to a Scottish town and find themselves drawn to a juicy local story, while Beyond the Sea takes place in an alternate 1969.

The fourth episode, Mazey Day, features a troubled starlet who is dogged by invasive paparazzi, and Demon 79 focuses on a meek sales assistant in northern England in 1979.

News of the number of episodes might be disappointing news for some, but where season six is lacking in quantity, let's just hope it bring some good quality.

Black Mirror season 6 is set to arrive on Netflix in June.
