Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan has opened up about the future of the Breaking Bad universe - and addressed whether fans will ever see another incarnation of the shows' beloved characters.

The world of Walter White, Jesse Pinkman, and Saul Goodman has been a beloved place in television since Breaking Bad first aired on AMC back in January 2008.

After five explosive seasons and a whole host of Golden Globe and Emmy Awards, series creator Gilligan kept viewers happy with El-Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019), and six-season spin-off series Better Call Saul.

While the former told concerned fans what happened to Jesse (Aaron Paul) after the devastating events of the Breaking Bad finale, the latter revealed how small-time attorney and former con-artist Jimmy McGill became the slimy criminal lawyer Saul (Bob Odenkirk).

Over the years, Better Call Saul has proven to be so much more than just a spin-off and received outstanding critical acclaim.

But, to the devastation of fans, the series will soon come to an end with the final episodes of season six set to air this August and answer burning questions like; will it all catch up to Saul (aka Gene Takavic)? Will Gus Fring finally catch Lalo? And, most importantly, what on earth is going to happen to Kim Wexler?!

In June, AMC boss Dan McDermott said the network's door 'is always open' for another spin-off, leaving it up to creators, Gilligan and Peter Gould, to make it happen.

Speaking in an interview with Variety, McDermott said: "I can tell you that if I could do anything to encourage Vince and Peter to continue on in this universe, I would do it.

"I think you’d have to ask them, but the door is always open and I long for the day my phone rings and Vince, Peter or our friends at Sony call to say, ‘Hey, I think we have another show set in this universe'."

The final season of Better Call Saul will air this month.

However, Gilligan has since confirmed that there is no immediate plans to extend the franchise - but refused to rule out a possible return to the franchise down the line.

He told Variety: "I suppose you should never say never, but we have no intention right now of extending this world.

"As much as I'd like to selfishly, we're really not thinking along those lines. I think Peter's ready to go off and do new things and I'm ready to do new things as well."

The final season of Better Call Saul will conclude on 15 August on AMC in the US and will air on Netflix in the UK
