Sabrina Carpenter has been slammed for her 'tasteless' April Fools' joke while performing on stage at a concert in Salt Lake City over the weekend (1 April).

The 23-year-old has since sent the internet into a frenzy after totally dividing opinions over her controversial gag.

Fans and critics alike are battling it out over whether Sabrina's joke was massively offensive or just some light-hearted fun. Check it out:

The singer took to the stage at The Union Event Center, Utah, last Saturday to perform a concert for her adoring fans.

Sabrina has been known to famously improvise the last few lines of her track 'Nonsense' - changing up the lyrics each time she performs it live.

The official outro lyrics read: "This song catchier than chickenpox is / I bet your house is where my other sock is.

"Woke up this morning, thought I'd write a pop hit / How quickly can you take your clothes off pop quiz?"

She has since wowed listeners with a whole bunch of other renditions - with many fans looking forward to what she'll come up with next when performing live in concert.

At the Salt Lake show, Sabrina begins the outro singing: "Put your hands up if you live in Salt Lake."

She continues: "How do you get alcohol on Sundays?"

Sabrina's third improv line then takes everyone by surprise.

Crowd footage of the moment shows her announcing to fans 'I'm pregnant', at which point the once-bellowing crowd go completely silent.

After a brief moment, the 'On My Way' star clarifies the shocking reveal was nothing but a joke.

She sings: "Happy April Fool's Day," and then bows as the audience finally resume their excited cheering.

The original TikTok has received nearly 800,000 views and has since been re-shared all across social media.

Pop Crave reposted the clip to Twitter with three million already viewing in just a matter of days after it was first uploaded.

One Twitter user commented: "Ooof, that’s some bad PR team she has. Who told her this was a good idea?

"Incredibly insensitive to people who can’t get pregnant, have had miscarriages, or how about women currently pregnant but at high risk for losing the baby?"

"This is so insensitive to the people who can’t get pregnant," echoed another, while a third added: "It’s honestly played out and tasteless but whatever."

A fourth asked: "I thought literally everyone knew this was not an OK April Fool's joke?"

"Just get rid of April Fool's day based on this," wrote another.

Others, however, didn't think Sabrina's joke was all that bad.

One Twitter user claimed: "Y’all are so sensitive oh my god lol."

"Reminder: Sabrina doesn’t owe anything to anyone who struggles with pregnancy," a second hit out before adding, "nor does anyone else."

A final Twitter user asked: "Am I the only one that doesn’t think this is a big deal…or even a deal…?"

What do you reckon?
