Ryan Gosling has revealed how he got into 'trouble' after filming a sex scene which he says 'felt real'.

Gosling, 43, has shot a fair few steamy scenes in his career, but it was one from a 2010 movie that sparked some controversy.

In the film Gosling starred alongside Michelle Williams. It followed the love life of couple Cindy and Dean (played by Gosling and Williams) down the pipeline of their dysfunctional marriage, alongside raising their daughter in the midst of trying to rekindle their relationship.

Speaking to The Guardian, Gosling hailed the flick - called Blue Valentine - as an 'anti-romance' and revealed that authenticity and making the plot feel 'real' was something he was 'excited' by.

He said: "Director Derek Cianfrance wanted this movie to celebrate people's faults, to demystify romance and to make something that felt real. I was excited by that."

But it was one scene in particular that landed the actor in hot water and even lead to a classification rating battle in America.

In the scene, Gosling's character is performing oral sex on Williams' character, Cindy.

"The sex felt real - it wasn't sexy or 'a sex scene', and that's why we got into trouble," he said.

Gosling highlighted that the reason why the sex scene looked so 'real' was because he had done such a 'good job' in acting it out.

He revealed: "You shouldn't be penalised for doing a good job."

Meanwhile, Williams told Reuters that she was 'shocked' over the controversy.

"It shocked me. It felt like a slap on the hand when I found out about it," she said.

"When we shot that scene, both Ryan and Derek said to me, 'If this bothers you when you see it in the movie, we'll take it out.'

"I thought, 'I've never seen that before in a movie and I'm proud to be the first. Good on us for making that happen.'

"As the woman in the situation that was in question, I found absolutely nothing scandalous, tawdry or disgusting about it."

Eventually, Blue Valentine was rated as an R, with those 'under 17 require an accompanying parent or adult guardian'.

The classification explains that the film 'contains some adult material' with 'parents urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them.'

Despite all the controversy, Blue Valentine was nominated for a series of awards.

Both Gosling and Williams were nominated for Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for their roles of Dean and Cindy.
