When it comes to making movies, it’s safe to say that Ryan Gosling knows a fair bit about how to bring a character and performance to life - but for his latest role, it turns out the Hollywood icon enlisted help from his very own daughters.

In his upcoming sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary, the La La Land star shares the screen with an alien ally named Rocky, who is voiced by James Ortiz.

Yet in order to add an extra layer of authenticity for his character’s conversations with his extraterrestrial pal, Gosling has now revealed that his daughters Esmeralda Amada, 11, and Amada Lee, 9 served as voice doubles for some of the takes to achieve a natural - and at times - hilarious response.

"Sometimes when I was working and I needed to sort of switch things up or whatever, my kids would come in and I had an earpiece in my ear and they would talk for Rocky, so I could talk to them as Rocky," Gosling told PEOPLE.

While Ortiz himself remains the voice for the final cut that will make it to screen, some of the reactions elicited by Gosling’s daughters will unfold for viewers, which include some ‘charming’ moments according to the actor.

"There's some moments in the movie where I'm laughing or I'm just so charmed by him, which is like, it's actually my kids talking to me and helping me out," the Nice Guys star explained.

And it’s not just voice doubling the girls have taken on either, as they also became invaluable test audiences for various cuts of the film to help turn it into the final polished result.

"They've seen many cuts of this film," the Drive actor said. "They've given me many notes.”

Among those notes were some key pointers on how to develop the look of the Blade Runner 2049’s appearance and further bring his portrayal to life.

In Project Hail Mary, Gosling plays a science teacher who travels to space to help save the planet - and according to his daughters, one particular accessory choice really helped to cement his role.

"When I was trying on stuff for the character and my daughter came by, and she was like, 'You look smart in glasses,'" Gosling remembered. "And I was like, 'I need to look smart in this, so I will thank you for that.'"

Based on the novel by Andy Weir, the same genius that brought us The Martian, the film features a star studded cast including Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Ken Leung (Industry), and Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us).

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo who previously helmed hits like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and 21 Jump Street, Project Hail Mary is set to hit theatres on March 20.
