Not many people can be recognised simply by their first name, but the American talk show host, Oprah, is certainly one of them.
Born into poverty in rural Mississippi, the story of Oprah’s meteoric rise to fame has inspired countless people across the globe.
She is best known for her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which ran for 25 series between 1986 and 2011 and ranks as one of the most popular American talk shows ever.
In fact, when the programme was at its peak in the 90s, it was watched by around 13 million viewers every single weekday.
As of 2022, Oprah Winfrey has an estimated net worth of $3.5 billion (around £2.9 billion), according to reports.

The 68-year-old media mogul became a billionaire in the year 2000, making her the first black woman billionaire.
Oprah’s cultural impact has been nick-named The Oprah Effect; a term that refers to the huge boost in sales experienced by any product endorsed on her show.
This phenomenon is particularly observed when it comes to books. Oprah’s Books Club – a segment from her show which she has kept alive since – has turned unknown authors into bestsellers.
Research found that within a week of featuring on Oprah’s book club, a book’s sales increased by a staggering 420 percent. And even 6 months later, sales remained 160 percent higher than their pre-Oprah levels.
A large part of Oprah’s income comes from her work with WW (formerly known as WeightWatchers). In 2015 she became an ambassador for the company, buying shares and joining the board.
These days, she is the CEO of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). This American cable channel replaced the Discovery Health Channel and primarily broadcasts entertainment and lifestyle programs designed to appeal to an African American audience.
As for philanthropy, the beloved billionaire has donated almost half a billion dollars to charitable organisations.
