Taylor Swift fans call the singer out for 'shameless cash grab' with 1989 re-release

She's doing three limited editions of the vinyl version of the album and her diehard supporters aren't happy.

Taylor Swift announced this month that her next re-recording release will be 1989 (Taylor's Version).

But some of her most dedicated fans are accusing her of creating a 'shameless cash grab' around the album's October 27 release.

But first, a quick refresher.

In 2019, Swift announced she would be re-releasing six of her albums after Scooter Braun acquired the masters to the originals.

Two years later, Swift released her own versions of her 2008 album, Fearless, and 2012 album, Red. And, last month, Swift released her own version of 2010's Speak Now.

Each re-release album is available to buy in vinyl, CD, cassette and digital formats. Speak Now even had limited edition vinyls that super fans could collect.

Swift has now attempted to create the same buzz around the 1989 vinyl releases.

Last week, she announced that in addition to the Crystal Skies Blue Edition of the vinyl, she was also releasing another version called the Sunrise Boulevard Yellow Edition.

Apart from being different colours, the album covers also feature different photos of Swift.

The 'Look What You Made Me Do' singer created a sense of urgency around the release of the Sunrise Boulevard Yellow Edition, announcing to fans that it would only be available to purchase for 48 hours.

Then, just days later, Swift announced a surprise third version of the album - the Aquamarine Green Edition.

"Oh hi guys! The Aquamarine Green Edition of 1989 (my version) is available on my site for the next 48 hours," she posted on her Instagram page on Monday.

This is when some of Swift's most-hardcore fans started accusing her of creating a 'shameless cash grab' around the album's release.

Swift's fans have taken to a dedicated sub-Reddit to discuss their feelings around the release.

"Why. So. Many. Versions. Of. The. Same. Damn. Album. Taylor," one person said in the forum. "I cannot deal with the money grabbing feel."

Another added: "Love her to death but the whole tactic of releasing these variations one by one and having them available for only 48 hours is so slimy to me."

A third wrote: "Another shameless cash grab."

While others suggested that she should release all versions at once so people can choose which one they want.

"I am so annoyed that she's releasing these one by one," one person wrote.

Another said: "Well I feel like an idiot for buying the previous 48 hour special when this is such a prettier cover photo. Wish she’d just show all the options at once."

A fan commented with: "I really wish she’d release all 4 versions at the same time and let people pick the one they want… the way they’re doing it now feels like too much of a money grab."

With the album set to be released on October 27, it's unclear whether more special editions will be announced in the next two months.
