Kim Kardashian has explained why she opted to wear a sweater that some people have described as 'raggedy' and a 'wardrobe malfunction' to the iconic Met Gala.

Each year, actors, musicians and reality TV stars gather together in New York for the Met Gala; an event known for attracting some of the most daring and creative outfits.

This year, the theme for the gala was 'Garden of Time'; a brief that attracted a lot of florals and nature-related accessories.

However, while most of the celebrities showed off floor-length gowns, sparkles and expensive suits, Kardashian surprised fans by wearing a grey cropped sweater over her impressive silver gown.

"The ugly grey sweater is a BAD accessory and it’s pilled too!," one person wrote after spotting Kardashian's look at the event.

Another speculated the star wore the cardigan to hide an issue with her outfit, writing: "I bet she had the sweater because it wouldn’t zip, or a wardrobe malfunction! Something is up."

It now turns out there is a story behind the sweater, and it wasn't just Kardashian's attempt at keeping warm.

In an interview with Vogue at the Met Gala, Kardashian explained the thinking behind the accessory as she described her take on the theme as the 'wildest night of [her] life in a garden'.

She painted a picture as she talked the publication through her outfit, saying: "I just ran out and grabbed my boyfriend's sweater and threw it on and had to get to work, and my hair's all messed up."

To complete the look, Kardashian wore her hair in loose beach waves with a simple silver eyeshadow used to match her dress.

The story certainly helps explain Kardashian's fashion choices for the Met Gala, though some fans still aren't convinced by the look.

"The constant tugging of the sweater makes it look awkward and uncomfortable," one person wrote after hearing Kardashian's reasons, while another simply wrote: "Can’t believe she‘s wearing a cardigan to the met gala."

Other fans have praised her style, however, with one person writing: "That dress is INSANE. WOW."

While another commented: "So absolutely gorgeous."

Kardashian was joined at the event by her sisters, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, who she said were among the stars she was most looking forward to catching up with.

“We all get nervous no matter how many times we've been,” she said. “It's like, 'mom where are you? Sisters, let's meet at the top'.”

Though she joked about a 'boyfriend' inspiring her outfit for the Met Gala, Kardashian is not officially linked to anyone romantically at the moment.
