Fans have been rallying around Cher after her interview with Jimmy Kimmel appeared to take an awkward turn.

The 'Goddess of Pop' featured on the late-night talk show in LA on Tuesday night (January 7) where she appeared to be on the receiving end of a grilling from the TV host.

Cher was talking about the first part of her memoir, which shot to number one on the New York Times list for six weeks after its release in November last year.

Cher: The Memoir, the Goddess of Pop (part two) is due to be released on November 18 this year and the pair were discussing it when the situation became somewhat heated.

And if you don't know by now, playing with Cher is like playing with fire.

Kimmel asked her some rapid fire questions about her life in a bid to 'help' her with the second part of her memoir.

Before the quick fire round, he asked: "The second part of your book, have you finished that yet? Is it done?"

Cher laughed out loud to the question and confessed she hadn't 'even started it', but Kimmel did not let up which apparently seemed to touch a nerve with the 78-year-old icon.

"Is that true?" he pressed, before going on to suggest the November release date was out of reach.

Cher responded: "I know but I finished [the first] book, five.. I mean, I was late."

"So, it's not coming out in November?" Kimmel continued, to which Cher bluntly replied: "Yes, it is."

She then rolled her eyes as Kimmel quipped: "We'll see," before going on to ask: "What November of what year?"

The singer then turned down the host's offer to help her with the book with a simple 'no'.

Then in his quick question round, he asked her a series of questions like if she's been to Costco, played a video game or if her driver's licence has a last name.

Cher revealed she had a court-approved special dispensation to axe a second name on her legal documents.

The Californian native then listed Barack Obama, Tina Turner and Ray Charles as the most intimidating people she's ever met.

Yet before Kimmel could ask his next question, Cher shut him down.

He started: "If you could turn back time..." To which she interrupted with: "This is so dumb."

Fans have since praised Cher for the hilarious interview, writing on social media it was a 'great watch'.

"I love your honesty and frankness, it's the Cher we all love!" one fan penned, while another said: "No matter her age. She speaks her mind, she is funny, she is kind."

Others said her authentic yet diva attitude is what makes her so loveable.

"This why I love Cher! She is 100 percent genuine and naturally funny and easy going... with a twist of sarcasm," a third commented.

After giggling at her own snap back, Cher finally answered Kimmel's question, saying she wouldn't know which year to 'turn back to' because she's 'dyslexic' but chose when she was 60 years old.

The pair's heated banter all appeared to be in good fun as the pop legend said at the end of the interview of Kimmel: "You're a lot nicer and funnier than I thought you would be."
