Marlon Wayans says he never married because he didn’t want his mom to be ‘jealous’

Marlon Wayans' reasoning for not getting married is a little bit sweet, even if you don't agree

Comedian Marlon Wayans has spoken out about his relationship with his mother and how that impacted his romances.

Marlon Wayans has recently opened up about the influence his mother has had on his life.

In an admittedly bizarre statement, he said he never married out of fear his mother would be jealous.

Speaking to the New York Times, the 51 year-old actor and comedian got into the details of his relationship with his mom.

"I never got married, because I never wanted my mother to be jealous of a woman. I never wanted my mother to feel second to any woman,” he said.

It is true, some parents can be very protective of their children and can be cautious of their potential partners.

Though Wayans was aware of his mother’s potential jealousy, he still went on to have relationships over the years.

Most notably he was in a long-term relationship with Angela Zachary from 1992 to 2013 and the pair share two children, Shawn and Kai.

Wayans also said that his mother was ‘very needy’ and discussed one of the last conversations he had with her before her death in 2020.

He continued: "I told my mother on her deathbed, 'I never got married because I always wanted you to be my No. 1 girl.'

“Those were my last words. I said, 'take that to heaven with you.'”

Speaking to Essence in 2021, he said: "I never got married because I knew my mom needed me,

"Women sometimes want to battle for your attention, they want to battle for your love, they want to be the one. Me and my mama share the same birthday. I’m not trying to hear you."

Since his mother passed, Wayans has admitted that he is now more open to the idea of getting married. In the same interview he said: “Yeah, I probably got one in me. Just one,"

"I like things to bend and not break, and I feel like when you get married, you have to get divorced in order to either be separated or together,"

"I like friendships because you just learn each other and you just grow and you just get better."

On his career, Wayans has hinted that he is willing to dive into his grief to bring out the best of himself for his fans.

His upcoming comedy special, Good Grief, is set to premier on Amazon Prime on June 6 and is expected to dive into the passing of his mother as well as his father, who died in 2023.

He has said: "I think as a comedian, I’m getting to the good stuff,

"When you talk about real-life pain, like parents passing, and you can get through that set and you can still be irreverent, edgy, crazy, silly, thought-provoking and vulnerable, I think that’s growth.”
