Lizzo believes cancel culture is appropriation because it's now 'trendy'

The singer says the term started out helping marginalized people but now it's been 'misused and misdirected'.

Lizzo has hit out at the concept of cancel culture and says it's been appropriated recently.

The singer took to Twitter to talk about her views on the idea of how people can be criticised if they've done something wrong.

Cancel culture has become a worldwide phrase in the past few years.

Loads of people, from regular folk to celebrities and politicians, have been 'cancelled' for doing something that contradicts with what's considered acceptable.

However some people have question whether cancel culture even exists after seeing some A-listers get nominated or even win awards despite being 'cancelled'.

Regardless of that small point, Lizzo thinks cancel culture isn't what it started out to be.

This may be a random time to say this but it’s on my heart.. cancel culture is appropriation.

There was real outrage from truly marginalized people and now it’s become trendy, misused and misdirected.

I hope we can phase out of this & focus our outrage on the real problems.

"This may be a random time to say this but it’s on my heart.. cancel culture is appropriation," she said.

"There was real outrage from truly marginalized people and now it’s become trendy, misused and misdirected.

"I hope we can phase out of this & focus our outrage on the real problems."

The tweet sparked a division of opinions in the comments section, with some people backing it while others reject the notion.

One fan wrote: "Does it even exist? The term is mostly brought up/misused by those who are afraid of facing accountability."

Another added: "Totally agree!!! I like to think it’s accountability. One can say what they like, but you can’t stop or manage how others receive your opinion, or they’re REACTION to it."

A third said: "That's a really great take. I hadn't thought to look at it like that. And it's very, very true. The power has gone out of it, and that's a real loss for marginalized peoples."

Others said cancel culture has started to turn into the same as 'triggered' or 'woke', which is another term that has exploded in popularity.

Triggered was being used by people who were describing their feelings on something that made them feel deeply uncomfortable due to past experiences.

Woke started out as a term that was meant for people who were progressive and awake to what was acceptable.

However, it started to become a catch-cry of the right, who would label anything that was contrary to their beliefs as 'woke' in a negative way.

A supporter said: "The right has tried to turn woke into a derogatory term. Now they use it when anyone promos anything representing POC or LGBTQIA. If it's not white cis het then it's 'woke' and apparently bad."
