The power of artificial intelligence continues to astound as social media users were duped after seeing pictures of Katy Perry seemingly at the Met Gala.

We all know that social media is constantly inundated with photoshopped images and doctored videos but the rise in AI-generated images is quickly becoming an issue.

A couple of images of Katy Perry started doing the rounds on X recently, leaving people convinced the singer was at the Met Gala on Monday (May 6).

The pop star is no stranger to attending the event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, so it's understandable that many believed she was actually there.

In one image, Perry is seen wearing a nature-themed gown - in line with this year's 'Garden of Time' dress code - and many fans remarked just how much they loved outfit.

In another picture, Perry appeared to be dressed in a classic ballgown covered with flowers around her body that tapered off down the skirt until the fabric pooled at her feet in a forest-like design.

Despite the two impressive outfits, Perry has since come out to clarify that she was not at the Met Gala and the images were, in fact, fake.

Sharing the pictures to her Instagram, Perry said that she ‘couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work’.

The 'Roar' hitmaker also posted a screenshot of a conversation with her mom, revealing that even she was fooled by the images.

Her mom texted her: "Ha Feather! Didn’t know you went to the Met, What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol."

Perry replied: "Lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!"

Well... that is certainly worrying that her own mother couldn’t tell the difference, but on the other hand parents are often the first to be fooled when it comes to social media stuff, just check your own family group chat.

Perry also shared a video of herself in the studio during the Gala to completely dispel the rumors that she was there.

The online response has been mixed, with some praising how convincing the images are while others have been left a little concerned.

“We're so f****d. Even Katy Perry's mum fell for this AI image. Unless we very quickly find a way to legitimise media, it's going to become very messy,” one person wrote.

Another added: "This is AI, but would have definitely been one of the best looks if it were real."

While a third commented: "I don’t even know which met gala pics are real or fake cuz of that katy perry tweet omfg."

Well, I guess going forward we need to be careful about what we believe online, even if there is photo ‘evidence’.
