Despite having three kids, regularly reciting lyrics and establishing an actual school, Kanye West has claimed he's never in his life read a book.
The rapper made the revelation during an appearance on the Alo Mind Full podcast, during which Alo Yoga co-founder Danny Harris and podcast host Alyson Wilson sought to 'paint a sonic picture of what’s on [West's] mind'.
In the show, Harris brought up a book he'd read more than 100 times which discussed philosophies on self-confidence.
West agreed with the philosophies, but made clear he'd never read that book. Or any book, for that matter, and even managed to compare reading to eating a certain vegetable.
"I actually haven’t read any book,” West said. “Reading is like eating brussels sprouts for me. And talking is like getting the Giorgio Baldi corn ravioli.”
Without knowledge of West's favourite foods we have to assume that 'Giorgio Baldi corn ravioli' is a good thing. Giorgio Baldi is a fancy Italian restaurant in Santa Monica, California, so if you happen to be in the area, get the corn ravioli and let us know.
However, I think it's pretty safe to assume brussels sprouts are not something West enjoys, because let's be honest, who does?
West went on to give an apparent insight into how he copes when faced with text by using an anecdote about Mike Howe, the inventor of the Ripsaw combat vehicle.
He explained: “When his mum texts him long paragraphs, he reads the first sentence and the last sentence. This person and his brother invented the fastest track vehicle – they put it in GI Joe, they have government contracts, this guy is a full-on-engineer, works with all geniuses, and for practical – not opinionated, you know, practical – technologies, and he only reads the first sentence and the last."
“What do you think my response was?," West continued. "Same."
Though West doesn't seem to feel that books are necessary for a full life, it's unclear whether this belief is being passed on to the children at Donda Academy. The school opened in late August, but a report from Rolling Stone revealed that parents were required to sign nondisclosure agreement in order for their kids to attend.
The school is named after West's late mother, who was a professor, and it based in Simi Valley, California. There, kids are said to participate in 'full school worship' alongside classes of language arts, math and science, according to the school’s website. Whether they're able to laugh at all the funny pictures in science textbooks, though, remains a mystery.
