Woman who charged iPhone to 80% every day for a year reveals impact it had on battery health

The impact was actually quite surprising

A woman has surprised many with her findings having doing a year-long experiment on her iPhone battery.

While we are surrounded by technological marvels on the daily, there is still one thing that has annoyed people since... well, since we’ve had this tech.

And that, quite simply, is your phone dying.

Thankfully, as tech has gotten better in the smartphone era this has meant that batteries charge quicker and seem to last longer even when we are using these supercomputers in our pockets to do a whole host of tasks.

With that said, when it comes to Apple, they have built up a rather unflattering reputation of having bad battery life on their iPhones.

Something they have been addressing over the years.

However, still fans have complained it isn’t quite good enough and have taken to all manner of methods to try and extend their battery life.

One of the more popular methods is never letting your battery charge completely to 100 percent or continuing to charge it once it reaches full charge.

In fact, on the Apple iPhone 14 and any of its newer phones you can actually set a charge limit from 80 percent up to 100 percent

To see if this ultimately benefited the battery health, an owner of an iPhone 16 Pro Max explained that she conducted an experiment to find out if keeping the limit to 80 percent was beneficial.

Posting on the Mac Rumors forum the owner explained that she had carried the experiment out first with an iPhone 15 a year ago before doing it again using the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

She noted that she only charged her phone to 80 percent and tried to avoid it falling below 20 percent and she explained that she used a mix of wireless and USB-C charging.

She said: “It was fine when home, but if I was out and wanted to use the camera or needed GPS, it often wasn’t enough battery.”

Showing her results in the post, she said her battery health was at 94 percent battery capacity after 299 charge cycles.

She concluded that this was about average regardless of charging habits.

She added: “I now have two years of data with my ‌iPhone‌ limited to an 80 percent charge, and I don’t think it’s been worth it.

“My coworker, who also has a 16 Pro Max, did not have an 80 percent charge limit set, and his battery capacity is 96 percent with 308 charge cycles.”

The woman closed by saying that she has now bought an iPhone 17 Pro Max and will try another year-long charge limit test.
