Social media users are in heated debate over what a 'complex' five miles from the Khufu pyramid in Egypt is.

A Google Maps user has taken to Reddit to reveal a strange sight they spotted near Egypt's Giza pyramids.

Precisely located at 29°54'23"N 31°08'02"E - 'five miles due south of the Khufu pyramid' - social media users are now questioning what the site could be.

The user took to the thread r/Alternative History to share a screenshot they took from Google Maps showing a 'complex' located 'precisely five miles due south of the Khufu pyramid,' questioning: "What in the Stargate is this? "[...] I can't find it labeled on any maps. Is anybody here familiar with this place?"

And it's not taken long for people to weigh in with their theories.

A user wrote: "If it was nevada i'd say rich guy's art project."

"Probably an ammunition bunker for the military," another added, while a third commented: "Anti aircraft missile or radar installation."

And a fourth responded: "I've now found a website showing the place with a similar assessment."

Indeed, on another site, a screenshot of the same area was shared in 2005 to 'Virtual Globetrotting', where the user questioned whether the complex was a 'SA-2 missile battery' site.

Another responded: "This one appears to be an SA-2 battery, split to better cover a particular section of the compass. The northern three revetments are empty but the southern three appear to have SA-2 launchers in them, but not missiles.

"The mounds are used to get a bit more height for the radar antenna. Even getting them up 20 or 30 feet above the flat desert makes a huge difference in range."

However, another argued it's 'a radar site'.

And it's not the only unusual sight which has been spotted on Google Maps recently either, as a mysterious 'UFO' disc has also sparked some chilling theories.

Earlier this year, users spotted a disc-shaped structure at the coordinates 34°24'21.6"N 107°05'44.5"W, about 34 miles from the Sevilleta National Refuge in La Joay, New Mexico.

The top of the white plate appeared to have metallic 'hardware' and the other side was hidden away by bushes and vegetation.

Social media users were divided, however, with Redditors suggesting it could be a 'crashed UFO stuck in the mountain,' while Twitter users argued that it's a 'calibration target' for satellites.

So what do you think?
